There is a Engie expansion happening in Africa and Zambia in particular. The first minigrid from the French company started its installation in Zambia. Furthermore, they want to expand Fenix. Fenix is their Solar Home System unit in Africa.
There is no information on the size of the minigrid Engie plans to install. The location will be at Chitandika, a small village in the east. This village, with 1500 residents, 278 households, schools and a health center, did not have access to electricity before.
The Solar Home System unit Fenix just started over a year ago in Zambia. Other countries the unit is present are Benin, Ivory Coast, Nigeria and Uganda. At this moment, they already sold over 400,000 Solar Home Systems in the region.
This is not the first time Engie starts a project like this, although it is for Zambia. Engie is for example already present in Tanzania with 13 projects. Their goal is to expand and install 2000 minigrids throughout Africa before 2025.
